Mental Health & Suicide Prevention

Construction Suicide Prevention Week | September 8-12, 2025

Every year, during September — National Suicide Prevention Month — the construction industry dedicates a week to raising awareness about the unique challenges workers face in construction that lead to suicide and what we can do to prevent it. Use the CSPW resources to plan activities with your workers during Construction Suicide Prevention Week, and register your company’s participation to receive an OSHA-recognized, industry-endorsed certificate of participation and electronic badge.

No matter how you decide to participate, we hope you will join us on Monday, Sept. 8 for one minute of silence during the first-ever, nationwide stand-down to honor all lives lost to suicide.

We’re also asking everyone in the industry to build community by checking in with colleagues, friends, family or even the guy or gal next to you in line at the store. Reach out and ask how someone is doing, then really listen to the answer. Download our 2025 pledge and sign your name to take the pledge.

Please take 60 second to register your company’s participation. Registration helps us track how far the CSPW message is reaching, the type of resources needed to support CSPW activities and where we need to focus our energy to make an impact.

Construction is the Second Highest-Rated Industry Affected by Suicide

In late 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) MMWR found that 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use and that 11% of U.S. adults seriously considered suicide. In the U.S., you are more likely to die from suicide than an automobile accident or by homicide. We lose 47,500 people per year to suicide, 38,800 to automobile accidents, and 19,141 to homicide. This means you are 2.5 times more likely to die by your own hand than the hands of others. More specifically, the construction industry has the highest rate of suicide at 53.2 per 100,000 U.S. workers. That rate is four times greater than the national average and five times greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined.

Mental Health PSA's

On December 6, 2022, AGC of America released a series of videos telling the stories of real industry professionals who have struggled with mental health. The hope is that in sharing their stories, others will know they are not alone, and it is okay to seek help when it is needed. These videos are part of the association’s ongoing efforts to combat high suicide rates and improve mental health among the industry’s workers.
